A Message from Jon

Dear reader,

Thank you for visiting my website.

In the next few months you will have to decide where you put your cross on the General Election ballot paper or whether you actually vote. In this area it is a straight fight between Labour and the Tories. Not voting, or voting for an alternative party or individual means you could be helping elect a Conservative MP for this area. This may come as a surprise to many of you, but be under no illusion this parliamentary constituency has a significant Conservative vote with many areas returning Conservative Councillors in recent years.

A Conservative Government will be devastating for an area like ours. The investment in our area such as the new hospitals, refurbished schools with nursery places for 3 to 4 year olds, wouldn’t have happened under a Conservative Government and will be under threat if David Cameron is elected. David Cameron has travelled the country making all sorts of promises – by his figures alone he has a shortfall of £34 billion if he is to meet all his pledges. Just as they did under Thatcher our communities will bear the brunt of these cuts.

Something David Cameron will no doubt deliver is his commitment to give the richest 3,000 families a £200,000 tax giveaway. A tax giveaway the majority of people in this constituency won’t benefit from but ordinary hard working people in the area will have to fund out of the public purse, at a cost of £2 billion a year.

Think carefully about where you put your cross. Do you really want a Conservative MP representing you in Parliament?

• The Conservatives will reverse Labour’s Cancer Promise – a guarantee to see a specialist within two weeks of your GP’s referral if you are suspected of having cancer.

• The Tories cannot be taken seriously on crime when they refuse to match Labour's commitment to protect front line policing.

• If you have a child – Child tax credits would be axed for many families, universal child trust funds would disappear, maternity and paternity allowances would be under threat. Funding for Sure Start centres has been put under threat in recent years by the Conservatives.

• If you are a pensioner you could lose your winter fuel allowance, free travel, eye tests, swimming, TV licence and passport (free if you were born before 2 September 1929), and your pension credit.

You can see what campaigns and issues I am involved in through these website pages. If you have any views about the area, campaigning activities or want to get involved, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me.

Best wishes
