
'We need a real debate about Europe' says local MP
Local MP, Jon Trickett, has for the past 2 weeks been campaigning strongly for a proper debate on the EU (Amendment) Bill (i.e. the Lisbon Treaty) in the House of Commons.
The Government have given a narrow time frame in which to debate the issues contained within the Treaty. After saying there would be around 20 days of debate, they have actually given around 12. Each of the first 8 days has one topic to be debated on that day. The topics generally favour the more positive aspects of

‘I don’t want to see a market in health care – our free at the point of need NHS is something to be proud of – we must fight tooth and nail to preserve it. How can we address these issues properly if there is no debate?’ – Jon Trickett MP
Mr Trickett has tabled a number of amendments and motions within Parliament to try and secure debate on vital issues. He has been backed by a large number of Labour MPs and all affiliated Trades Union.
