MP Calls for debate on Housing for the Elderly

MP CALLS FOR A DEBATE ON HOUSING FOR ELDERLY

Local MP Jon Trickett called for the Leader of the House of Commons to look into the issue of housing for the elderly and asked Rt Hon Harriet Harman MP for a debate on the issue. Mr Trickett made a special note of St Clements Court in South Kirkby where the decision has been made by Anchor Housing Association to close the facility. This decision has caused anxiety, anger and confusion among residents, many of whom have lived there for years and are struggling to be re-housed. The Hemsworth MP pointed out that there is growing need for accommodation for older people and that there is a need to debate the issue in order to find real solutions.

The Leader of the House promised to raise the issues with the Secretary of State for Health and agreed with Mr Trickett that the topic of housing for the elderly and residential care must be addressed.

There is increasing demand for housing for the elderly – be it in the form of bungalows or supported living accommodation.  I recognise there is a need to modernise the kind of homes that are available for elderly people but the closure of St Clement’s Court and the lack of available suitable housing in the area has created real problems.  No elderly person should have to worry about where they are going to live and that is why I have called for this debate’Jon Trickett MP

Residential care and support for those caring for relatives is something that affects many people in our area. These facilities are lifelines for many and I want to see a secure and sustainable supply of accommodation for everyone who needs it’Jon Trickett MP
