MP URGES ACTION TO STOP FLOODING

Jon Trickett MP this week called on the Government to help people in South Elmsall who live in fear of flooding because of a beck running behind their homes. In the floods last summer homes and gardens that border Hague Hall Beck were put in jeopardy by the rising water and restriction of water flow because of blockages. A number of houses were flooded.

Residents want to make sure that the same does not happen again and Jon has called on the Government to look into this.

The Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Hilary Benn MP said that the situation with the Beck was being looked into and that the Wakefield area is one of the pilot areas for surface water drainage projects. Jon has written to the Secretary of State to get clarification about the scheme as a number of people in the area – especially in Minsthorpe have complained about blocked gullies.  Hague Hall Beck is actually designated as a main River and covered by the Environment Agency.

Jon Trickett said:

‘The floods last year are terrible and of course people are going to be worried about their homes being ruined again – that is why I brought this up with the Secretary of State. I have been assured that this is being looked into and will continue to press the Government for action’

‘It shouldn’t be that case that every time it rains people are worrying how much rain can fall before their houses are put in danger – this problem needs to be resolved’

Mrs McCusker who lives in the area affected by Hague Hall Beck contacted Jon to get help for herself and others residents. She says that she will keep fighting for something to be done because people in the area are worried every time it rains that their houses might flood.

Jon said:

‘I have been trying on behalf of Mrs McCusker, along with other people in the area, for a long time to resolve the flooding issues locally and have been frustrated with the lack of progress.  This  is why I raised the matter directly  in Parliament with the Environment Minister and I will continue to do everything I can to help’
