MP WARNS OF TAX SCAM PHONE CALLS
Jon Trickett MP has warned local people to be vigilant and really think about who they give their details out to online, on the phone or on paper.
Jon has previously warned about scam emails and letters but has recently been made aware of a scam where people, who appear to be from outside the country, call on behalf of the ‘British Government’ about a ‘Refund Tax’. In one case the unscrupulous individual called an older resident of
This scam may be especially relevant as many people will be receiving some tax back in their September pay packet. Due to changes in tax allowances, many people will get an extra £60 in their pay packet this month and another £10 a month for 6 months after that. Jon wants to make sure people in the Express area do not confuse their extra tax allowance with any scam phone calls they might receive.
Jon said:
‘Many people will be getting a bit extra in their pay packet this month; the Government won’t be calling everyone individually to ask about it and would not cold call asking for your bank details. People should be very careful who they give details to over the phone or online.’
‘I cannot over state how much care people should take. Many of the people carrying out these scams seem to be based abroad and getting back any of the money that is effectively stolen can be next to impossible.’
