Jon Trickett MP has welcomed the innovative new pilot program that will come to a school in the area.
As part of a Government scheme called ‘Back on Track’, Wakefield District Community School, in South Hiendley, will run two pupil referral units in partnership with the Local Authority and The Able Partnership. The pilot, christened the ‘Enable Project’, aims to put in place high quality alternative provision for young people that have been excluded from school or cannot attend mainstream schooling for various other reasons.
The program will take up to 20 pupils per week in years 9 -11. The young people who will take part will be drawn from some of the most vulnerable people in the area and will be young people who will really benefit from the kind of learning environment the pilot aims to create. The young people who will participate are expected to achieve qualifications in land-based and environment related subjects and develop core skills as well as problem solving and working with others. There will be a clear path to post-16 for those who want it.
Jon Trickett said:
‘It is important that all children can access the education they need. For some young people, mainstream education hasn’t worked and we need to make sure that these young people are given a chance to learn a skill, gain qualifications and have opportunities that can help them find work in future’
‘I am proud our area has been chosen as a pilot and am hopeful that the young people who are given an opportunity by this scheme will see the benefits in years to come. Helping give young people the skills they need to support themselves in work is such a vitally important thing
