Local MP encourages people to seek help if they are facing debt problems

Member of Parliament for Hemsworth, Jon Trickett is supporting a national debt charity and encouraging people across the region to seek help if they are struggling with financial problems.

Debt Advice Foundation, a registered charity, has launched a specialist debt helpline and website in response to growing demand for debt advice in the UK.

Jon Trickett, Member of Parliament for Hemsworth, said: “Growing numbers of people are finding it difficult to keep up credit repayments, in many cases because of unscrupulous credit companies and banks.  I have had a number of people come to me with debt problems and it is important that they receive impartial and immediate advice from an expert team.

“Debt Advice Foundation offers free advice and support from specialist debt advisors, as well as online resources to help people understand more about their current financial situation and the options that are available to them. Details about the charity are therefore now featured on my website, as a trusted source of free debt help for my constituency to use.”

“For many people, their financial problems are a direct result of an unforeseen life event such as redundancy, reduced working hours or a new addition to the family.  So if you are struggling I suggest you either visit www.debtadvicefoundation.org/help or call Debt Advice Foundation on 0800 2922077.  Contact details are also available on www.jontrickett.org.uk.

Debt Advice Foundation’s financial tips:

Know what you owe - Calculate exactly how much you owe and how much you have coming in. Debt Advice Foundation’s Debt Analyser tool can help you do this – and is free to download from the charity’s website.

Prioritise your debts - If you have a debt problem, make sure you know who you should be paying first, such as your mortgage or rent payments, council tax, court fines, maintenance, hire purchase and utilities.

Look at ways to save - Don't spend what you don't need to and shop around for the best deals. Take a look at what you spend each month, ask yourself: "do I really need it?”. If the answer is yes, then ask: "can I get it cheaper?"
