Today it has been revealed that hospitals are missing their A&E targets with the worst result since April 2013. Even Pontefract and Pinderfields Hospitals are struggling to reach their targets.

The full scale of the pressures facing the NHS are now clear to see, under the current Government many people have found it much harder to get a GP appointment and with more than a quarter of NHS walk-in centres having been closed and 850 fewer GP surgeries offering extended hours than in 2009, people often have no other choice than to attend A&E departments.

To take off some of the strain, Labour have created a ‘Time to Care Plan’ which would see 20,000 more nurses and 8,000 more GPs paid for by a tax on properties worth £2 million or more. We would also guarantee a GP appointment within 48 hours -; and on the same day for those who need it.

We would repeal the Tories’ Health and Social Care Act and integrate health and social care services into a system of “whole-person care”, give mental health the priority it deserves and guarantee that patients will wait no longer than one week for vital cancer tests and results by 2020.

The NHS simply is not safe under this Government.
